Obsession with Beading

Filed in archive Beading

Beading seems to be the new knitting. There are some fantastic beads out there to play with too. So, don't be afraid to depart from seed beads and start getting into the huge variety of exotic beads that are being produced.

Purple Gems - Its Not Just About Amethysts

Filed in archive Fine Jewelry , Gemstones
I've always been a sucker for purple. When it comes to purple gems though most people think of amethyst icon. Don't get me wrong - amethysts are lovely stones. However, there are a range of other purple gems. The ring shown here has a tanzanite amethysts as the central stone - you can see the colour just stands out so much more than the purple of an amethyst.

If you're into purple gems you might want to look into tanzanite
purple gems, iolite
icon, or even jadeicon. Break out of the amethyst worldicon you live in.

Seed beads can be used to great effect but most people's seed bead creations seem totally uninspired. Varvara's designs are different. If you want to see just how amazing the humble seed bead can look, you should definitely see Varvara's creations.

Diamond Hat

Filed in archive Fine Jewelry

Only in Australia. Over here we have a huge race carnival in November - the Melbourne Cup. Its actually a public holiday in the Melbourne CBD. We love our horse racing.

This year, we may have gone a tad overboard. Ashley Franklin and Australian jewellers Grege: The House of Jewellery have combined their talents to create a diamond, gem and pearl encrusted hat worth $1 million.

At 2.5 kilos, let's hope whoever is choosen to wear it (rumour is that it will be Miss Universe, Jennifer Hawkins) will need a strong neck on her shoulders.

lampwork glass bead

I'm really starting to get interested in lampwork beads. Lampwork beads are handmade glass beads that can look absolutely stunning.

Kim Miles makes some amazing lampwork beads. Kim's beads feature what looks like beautiful flowers inside them - all handcrafted by Kim.

Other lampworkers create mottled or abstract beads and even miniature artworks.
