$14 Million Diamond Theft

Million Dollar Diamond Theft - Stolen Diamonds

Two diamonds worth about $14 million have walked out the door of the Louvre museum. One was a 47 carat white diamond, the other a rare 15.75 carat blue diamond.

For some reason, no alarm system or cameras were in use in the area where the two diamonds were being displayed. The diamonds were part of an antiques and jewelry show. The show's president, Christian Deydie said "There was a little incident...".

I don't know about you, but over 60 carats of diamonds vanishing occurs to me as more than a little incident. It has been alledged that the two Chopard employees stepped away from their booth for 15 minutes - an allegation which has been denied by the co-chairwoman of Chopard. However, I find it quite hard to believe, had the employees been at the stand, that someone could just remove two huge diamonds from a display case without being noticed.

Then again, why choose to hold an exhibition that is designed to show off the best, rarest and most expensive gems in the world in a place that doesn't seem to have the best security? No cameras, no alarm system - it doesn't sound like an ideal location for small, easily portable and incredibly expensive items.
