For better or worse there are a number of traditions regarding "birthstones". September's stone is sapphire. Now, the belief originally stemmed from the idea that each birthstone had a specific virtue that would be bestowed upon anyone born within the stone's month.

Nowdays, of course, its more about personal preference on what you believe looks good than anything else. The funny thing is though, that there are so many different traditions on what birthstone belongs to each month that you can pretty much just choose whatever you want and say its your birthstone.
