Beth Orduna Jewelry

Filed in archive Jewelry Designers by Maggie MacLean on July 03, 2008

Born and reared in Los Angeles, jewelry designer Beth Orduna designs eclectic jewelry that is collected by a loyal following, including celebrities and fashionistas. She is a pioneer in experimentation, and boldly mixes precious metals and stones with the natural materials of ribbon, silk, and leather - resulting in pieces as unique and individual as the person who wears them.

Speckled Wood Bead, Pearl and Crystal Necklace with Chenille
This long speckled wood bead chain by Beth Orduna is strung in white chenille, alternating with sections of white pearls and clear round crystals. 4 sterling silver charms dangle from the chain: a heart key, an etched leaf, an evil eye and a tiny star. Total length is 28" with a lobster clasp.
$530

Trained in jewelry and fashion design, Beth Orduna finds inspiration in her Mexican heritage and her contemporary life in Los Angeles. For Beth, jewelry design is a symbol of the human spirit. "It's about capturing beauty, evoking personal feelings, and sharing an experience," she says.

Beth chooses materials she finds during her travels around the world, and her jewelry is lauded for its seamless fusion of history and the present - one-of-a-kind art pieces that are classic and beautiful. She believes that nature teaches us, and she chooses only natural materials for her innovative jewelry.

A self-trained jewelry designer, Orduna loves to experiment with the unexpected. This has gained her recognition for pioneering such innovations as pearls on leather, tattered silk-wrapped gems, and reticulated metals. "I prefer the flawed, discarded stones and materials as my muselinks."

This, coupled with the wabi-sabi philosophy, has been the marker of Beth's design execution since the beginning of her career twenty years ago. Wabi-sabi is the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection and in nature, of accepting the natural cycle of growth, decay, and death.

It reveres authenticity above all. Wabi-sabi is flea markets, not warehouse stores; aged wood, not Pergo; rice paper, not glass. It celebrates cracks and crevices and all the other marks that time, weather, and loving use leave behind. Wabi-sabi reminds us that we are all but transient beings on this planet.
