If you go to an independent jeweler these days, you might look at different designs to find ideas. But at some of them, instead of looking at a paper sketch of a custom piece, you'll look at a computer screen.
West & Co. Diamonds Jewelry in Webster was among the first jewelers in the area to incorporate computer-aided design
into its business. [...]Customization is crucial for small, independent jewelers, Nytch said. Shoppers are willing to pay slightly more for a custom design.
"The nature of retail is changing," said Nytch, 46. "It's gotten really challenging. The industry is going to be much different."
Unique designs are the latest trend in jewelry sales, Nytch said. The baby boom generation preferred brand names when it came to jewelry design, but many younger people would rather have a piece of jewelry created specifically for them, he said.
