Originally from St. Petersburg, Russia, Dmitriy Pavlov currently lives and works in Madison, Wisconsin. His successful exhibitions in Finland and Russia, including the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, have earned him an international recognition and art awards. In 1999, Dmitriy and his wife, Galina, immigrated to the United States and in 2002, and started the DP Studio.

Metalsmithing Techniques:
Hand Piercing and Engraving a Ring
The first step of engraving is metal strip drilling. The metal strip, with pre-drawn design pattern, is pierced with the finest drills with diameter of 0.3-0.5mm. Often, the space between the scrolls is so small, that the hole actually touches the scrolls. This process outlines the design of the ring.

Metal Strip Piercing
The finest saw blades 0.18-0.21mm are used for piercing. The process is commonly done under the microscope for insuring utmost precision. After piercing the metal strip, the inner side of each hole is polished and burnished with the dull back side of the saw blade.

Metal Strip Bending
The metal strip with pierced scrolls is bent in a desired ring shape. In order to preserve the fine and fragile scrolls from tearing apart, a lead block, mandrel, and a rawhide mallet are used for accurate shaping.

Ring Soldering
After bending and shaping, the ring is soldered. Only hard solders are used in this process for obtaining the maximal strength of the joint. Now the blank is ready for engraving.
