Celebrity Jewelry

No, really, they are probably THE biggest jewelry retailer in the world, and now Heidi Klum's jewelry has managed to take a piece of this huge retail jewelry pie with her recent visit to this shopping network.
I've gotten reports from all kinds of new sources that she totally rocked the TV air waves. I'm very bummed that I spaced and missed it, but here is some of what I've managed to dig up on what I missed as well as some jewelry eye candy from her collection. Enjoy.
From Yahoo.com:
Supermodel, supermom and Project Runway host Heidi Klum's jewelry line struck a lucky chord on its September 14 QVC launch, with 14 of 16 styles in the debut collection completely selling out, ending the anticipated hour-long broadcast after only 36 minutes. Overall, more than 11,000 pieces were sold during the show.
The Heidi Klum Collection features beautifully versatile pieces crafted in sterling silver, 14K gold, and 18K gold-clad sterling. Klum's inspiration for the collection comes from the patterned floor of the Duomo in Milan, and the four-leaf clover symbol appears in necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings in a variety of different ways to suit every woman's taste. Favorites of the show included Klum's signature clover hoop earrings; a textured sterling cuff that she wore to the 2006 Emmy Awards; and a casual clover-leaf pendant on interchangeable silk cords.
"I am ecstatic that the QVC customers responded so well to my collection," says Klum, creative visionary behind the new fashion jewelry line. "I hope the pieces are true good luck charms for the women who wear them."

I have a slightly different take on this-I question what percentage of the designs are her design work. I realize from her PR that she claims to have advised Mouawad-but perhaps my cynicism comes from so many celebrities jumping on the fashion industry train. The impressiveness of the achievement is lessened as each celebrity gets to tag their name on a line simply because they are famous. It would be different if Heidi were not a world famous model, and host of Project Runway. Then one could say she truly conquered QVC-but in this case-who conquered who? QVC certainly has nothing to lose by attaching themselves to Ms. Klum's celebrity name and status.
It's discussed frequently that it's one thing to draw a jewelry design, but quite another to manufacture the illustrated piece.
I'm not saying she doesn't have a right to start a business using her name-I'm just saying that I'm not so quick to attribute the skills and talent behind the line directly to her.
P.S. Sorry for the first post-my cursor went bonkers on my laptop touchpad.

Although it is true that having a celeb attatched to a product questions whether we can really get excited over the "success" of their item, I think you have to look at the longterm success over the short term.
I am bummed that I missed the episode, I was out that night and didn't see it because I wanted to buy a piece myself and it's impressive that she sold over 11,000 pieces. I do believe (I also posted about this on my site) that pairing up with a high end manufacturer ensured the validity of her brand beyond just her name. Finally, working in the fashion industry and at one time the music industry, it's very easy to get the initial buzz and make your product seem like the next big thing. Over time and after the hype is over, those who really make a great product tend to stay in our memories and those who paid a lot into great marketing sift over into another market or become non-existant.
I believe that the branding of Klum may make this product last since I was surprised to see that she had a partnership with Birkenstock! I don't know how long that had been around and I am not a Birkenstock fan but I was surprised to see it. It will be interesting to see where the jewelry will end up within that paridigm.

I have mixed feelings on this kind of thing. As someone who has made jewelry myself, spent much time and money learning the craft, and honestly, could easily spend a lot more, I also question how much any celeb really can contribute other than vague ideas. If you don't know your material, then you can't truely be a designer. On the other hand, I've pitched before to QVC and while I'm a nobody compared to her, it was a tough nut to crack. Also, I do honestly like many of her designs in this line, and with her background in fashion, I think at the very least she brings a sense of her own style to her jewelry.

I have to tell you that i ordered serval pieces from that show and I was dissapointed with the quality of the pieces that i ordered. In the end I found that my jewler who carries the line at a trunk show that both the signature clover and the earings are avialable in a bigger size also in silver made in italy under the designer name and done in better quality. the pendent has an undercarriage with the signature clover and the pieces look don't look like something that a 13 year old girl would be wearing.
