Jewelry Diva Blog Rant
Filed in archive Jewelry News on June 25, 2007
Time out for a jewelry diva rant folks! And, I'm really talking to those wonderful designers, manufacturers, and other folks in the jewelry business world. Listen up!
The time of the blog is here. In fact, we are well entrenched in the electronic apparatus and are quickly over-taking the old hardcopy media that you are so familiar with.
I'm not saying hard copy magazines are out, but what I am saying is that you need to tune your brains into those of us on the cutting edge of new media - those of us in the blogosphere who are here trying to get the word out about your jewelry.
I can't tell you the number of times I'm surfing around, discover a great site with Fabo jewelry that I know my readers (and I got a lot of 'em!) would love to read about and, yes, SEE, as in view. Yet, I'm stopped by some kind of ridiculous copyright statement: "The images on this site are not to be copied without permission. Yada, yada, yada."
Okay, so yes, protect yourself. But, also give us blog press folks something in return or you will continued to be ignored. The digital world is a mixture and text and images. We are like a big beautiful interactive scrapbook for readers to pick and choose what they want to read and look at.
When you have a web site but have no information available for blog media folks like moi, that means you want to be ignored. Am I right? That you want us all to just click on by. See ya! (Somehow I don't think this is the case.)
So, get a clue. It's the age of the blog, baby, and that means either have a media area with downloadable images and maybe a press release even, or get over yourselves and get rid of that has-been hardcopy-mindset copyright BS on your sites.
Okay, rant over...back to blogging about brilliant jewelry folks who want to been seen.

I think what you are saying is correct, but what would you like us to put on a website for you to use on a blog. We are silly people who need help!!!!

Really great post. Many jewelry sites don't have a clue about blogs and social media.

OMG I so agree with you. I understand that they want to protect the sanctity and copyright of the photos from others who would use them to promote themselves and their store but there should be a way to pull photos easily if you are going to give them coverage.
It's so freaking frustrating that when I am on a roll or it's after hours and they aren't around (and may not answer my email for days), I need images *now*.. not a week from now just because they aren't web savvy enough to get you the images quickly or build a press page where you can get the images easily
my 2 cents.. rant over.

It is indeed the age of the blog, baby. As a fellow fashion blogger (http://fashiontribes.typepad.com/),
I find it mindboggling when anyone trying to sell their wares online gets persnickety about image usage - particularly if they actually want press coverage. Print magazines no longer enjoy the total monopoly & stranglehold they've had for so many years on the flow of info to the fashion-buying public; instead, we bloggers often scoop them, and we are also more likely to promote a cool indie designer...not because we are horsetrading editorial placement for ad dollar, but - gasp - because we actually like their work & want people to know about them.

i think the age of the copyright is going to have to change with "web 2.0" - which is a big adjustment for artists and designers who tend to have a very close guard on their ideas and their work. i say that if you are putting it online, you are putting it out there for everyone. that means more than just viewing pleasure - what's really funny to me is the disclaimers on blogs these days saying "DO NOT COPY or steal, all writing copyright so and so blah blah" and useless huge (and ugly) watermarks that distort images.
the thing is this: if someone is going to rip you off, that's a risk you take putting it out there - and no little sidebar disclaimer is going to stop someone looking to rip you off.
but that risk seems pretty small and shabby compared to the awesome connections online for me. :)

Hey guys..I need your help. I'm the Director of Sales for Royal Order jewelry and I was wondering if anyone knows any tricks on how to get in touch with retail buyers in the jewelry industry. Everyone should check out our website which is royalorder.com and let me know what you think. Our stuff is a blend of rock and roll and high fashion jewelry.

I couldn't agree more! If I want to review a site and I can't easily get images I will just skip right over them. Same thing if there is no way to buy the jewelry online.

I work with Italian jewelry designer, Francesca Visconti, we do not have this aspect of the business besides the website. I really care to understand blogging and what I could do to expand into this as a tool. What would you need from me?
Thx! Look forward to getting replies!

there are still a lot of things to be learned about the world of jewelry web marketing like this blogging business. it would be helpful if people behind the jewelry websites would care to understand how blogs can help them promote their site as well as their products. copyrights have just been a sort of security but i think with open communication among bloggers and website owners, the problem should be resolved with less fuss.

I understand your point of view, and I realise a blog (especially a rant) is a 'get it off your chest' spontaneous thing, but you could ask to use an image. If you've got nothing but praise for a particular item I'm sure the owner of the image/jewellery will have no problem allowing you use of the image.
