, aka the study of bugs and insects, takes on a whole new dimension thanks to Mikel Lefler of Bijoux du monde. It is no surprise this jewelry designer began as a scientist. From Local jewelry designers create buzz with baubles:
She started casting them in resin paperweights, and was soon creating earrings, pendants, and rings with everything from houseflies to ladybugs.
Lefler captures most specimens herself. Perusing parks with a butterfly net, and then sealing them in jar with a deadly gas.
Others she orders from a butterfly farm. Some friends even bring her carcasses they find on their windowsill.
A trip to Mikel Lefler's web site, www.bijouxdumonde.net, offers a selection of jewelry pieces. Each includes either an entire insect or wings and is made of resin with silver bezels. The site also includes a list of retail shops and shows.
