It began when, as a graduate anthropology student, he roamed the mountain ridges and canyons of the American northwest, searching for clues and artifacts of Native Americans. Fascinated by the inherent beauty of natural stones and objects of nature, he began to fashion them into articles of personal jewelry.

John Bagley's early creations were earth jewelry, combining gold and silver with jasper, agate, and bone, as well as other found objects of nature. They were elemental, bold, and experimental. John strove to give them the power of a totemic image - a fetish worn to transfer the power of nature to an individual.

Due to his disappointment with the innate separateness of stone and metal in traditional bezel settings, he began to use the ancient technique of inlaying stones into metal to create more integration of his jewelry's design elements.
