Gold and Gemstone Jewelry
"Twenty years ago when I began my business," says Kiki McDonough, "women could only buy high-end or antique jewelry, or hope that grandma would leave them a string of pearls. I could see a gap in the market for modern designs using semiprecious stones." Coming from a family of jewelers, who sold antique jewels in London's Burlington Gardens, McDonough had an early appreciation and understanding of jewelry design.
Parizade Disc Pendant
Set in 18k yellow gold, this piece features a stunning central blue sapphire beautifully framed by citrine, amethyst, and diamonds. With a slightly distressed finish, this piece is truly unique and reminiscent of amulets of the ancient world. Measuring 25mm in diameter, this pendant is suspended from 18" gold chain.
$3346
In 1985, the UK was entering a new era of wealth, and fashion was rediscovering color, and McDonough seized the opportunity to sell modern designer jewelry to women with higher levels of disposable income. Not that it has always been easy, McDonough admits. Despite the various fashion changes of the past 20 years, she says that, even now, she still has to persuade women to be more adventurous in wearing colors.
Scheherazade Gemstone Bracelet
This 18k yellow gold bracelet features three large oval gemstones in amethyst, citrine, and topaz, each measuring 15mm by 11mm. Measuring 7 1/2 inches in length, this striking piece is detailed by smaller citrine, amethyst and peridot each surrounded by white diamonds.
$2240
McDonough is a firm believer that jewelry should be worn by women to enhance their natural beauty. Her jewelry is not heavily branded or in an instantly recognizable style, but it is noticeable for its strong use of color combinations. These ultra-feminine jewels, in pretty pastel colors, can be worn from day to night.
Rocha Gemstone Drop Earrings
Made in 18k white gold, these striking drop earrings feature crystal blue topaz and deep purple amethyst, and are detailed with five faceted white diamonds. A classic Kiki design, these earrings measure 35mm by 10mm and fasten with a comfortable and secure lever back ear post.
$2940
The way McDonough combines colors to such great effect is, she says, based purely on her own instinct. Her first inspiration came from admiring the colors at the ballet, and her designs still have a certain theatrical dazzle. Her collections are made by manufacturers in the UK and around the world, to her own exacting standards.
