This is a wonderful topic! I have intended for some time to write about this, in light of the many "green" readers who populate the blogosphere. The idea of Reuse, Recycle is becoming increasingly popular.

I have recycled some pieces myself, but it's generally a case of salvaging the stones and giving the original metal to the designer in "trade" - sort of allowing them to deduct what they think is reasonable for the metal. Otherwise, you're right, it's prohibitively expensive to do so. People are really shocked when they find out what their pieces are worth in trade (not much), and it really disappoints people!

Further, don't you agree that if one is trying to "move on" so to speak, they would want to release what they're hanging onto?

That would be excellent if you could expand on this, especially with your background. I think it's something the average person doesn't really understand.

Great piece on (recycling) old jewelry! My company, Jewelry Recycling Centers of America (http://www.JewelryRecyclingCenters.com),
sees a lot of "old boyfriend" jewelry. Yes, we melt jewelry, but prefer to repair and refurbish whenever possible. It's more cost effective than, as you mentioned, creating new jewelry. More environmentally friendly too!

Great piece on (recycling) old jewelry! My company, Jewelry Recycling Centers of America, sees a lot of "old boyfriend" jewelry. Yes, we melt jewelry, but prefer to repair and refurbish whenever possible. It's more cost effective than, as you mentioned, creating new jewelry. More environmentally friendly too!
