Slane & Slane Fine Jewelry

Filed in archive Fine Jewelry by Maggie MacLean on September 17, 2008

Born and raised in High Point, North Carolina, sisters Heath and Landon Slane came to the business of designing jewelry with the resources that might otherwise have put them through graduate school. After various career explorations and experiences in Santa Fe, Los Angeles, and New York, The Sisters came together in 1995 with the vision of creating sterling silver designer jewelry with the same quality and detail that historically had been dedicated only to gold and platinum.

The Bee Collection
Introduced in 1997, the Bee Collection is the most widely collected of the Slane & Slane designs. No ordinary bee, Slane & Slane's bee is inspired by the Napoleonic symbol of wisdom, strength, and nobility. The bee is considered to be the oldest emblem of the sovereigns of France and was adopted by Napoleon to visually link the new dynasty to the very origins of the country.

The Ventus Collection
Ventus is Latin for wind, and seemed an appropriate name for the collection that draws inspiration from the base of the first modern wind generator built by Smith-Putnam in Rutland, Vermont circa 1941. Wind has been harnessed by man since ancient times for energy and propulsion and is a source of powerful intrigue to Heath and Landon.

The Fenestra Collection
Awe-inspiring cathedral windows were the inspiration for the Fenestra Collection, which takes its name from the Latin word for window. Fenestra represents a subtle change in the design exploration of Slane & Slane, with the introduction of a more open and lighter forging of hand and metal. Diamonds, with their reflective qualities, have been added as accents, and as with each design, add a sparkling texture while mirroring the fluid lines of the finished piece.

Slane & Slane Fine Jewelry has appeared in many fashion magazines, including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, InStyle, Elle, and Marie Claire. They display their jewelry several times each year at various trunk shows at Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and other fine jewelry stores across the country.

The desire to own sterling silver jewelry that mirrored the same fine jewelry quality and craftsmanship of gold jewelry, led sisters Heath and Landon Slane to create what they could not find in the world of designer jewelry. Heath's background in fashion and photography and Landon's in film and television introduced an unusual combination of talents and insights to the world of jewelry design.

The sisters' diverse aesthetic sensibility and lifestyle influences - Heath lives in Los Angeles and Landon lives in New York - as well as their love of exotic travel, added to the formation of a distinctive signature style. Their design inspiration is rooted in classic architecture, mythology, a love of animals and spiritual influences. Twenty-five collections and various line extensions over eleven years of design have found appreciative audiences and devoted collectors throughout the United States and Canada.

It took Heath and Landon two years to find manufacturers who both understood their vision, and who had the expertise to realize it. Today, each design is manufactured and finished in the heart of the American jewelry manufacturing center, New York, where Heath and Landon can maintain control of the quality and the distinctive finishes. Using the lost wax casting method, each Slane & Slane design is cast and finished by hand. The resulting artisan look is one of the most distinguishing and coveted characteristics of each Slane & Slane design.

Numerous childhood influences shape their design sensibility, not the least of which was an utter fascination with their stylish and worldly grandmothers. Portraying restrained elegance with flourishes of a grand scale or splashes of vibrant color, the girls' eyes were trained on a style that never looked predictable, but always looked appropriate. It is this sensibility which defines their design aesthetic.

Distinctive finishes in both their sterling silver and 18 karat gold designs characterize collections which are at once familiar but new. Drawing inspiration from a myriad of sources, each symbolic to one or the other, the sisters have defined a look that seamlessly complements the wardrobes of women in the workplace, out for the evening, or at play on the weekend. Worn individually, mixed or matched, Slane & Slane's Collections are appreciated both for their understated elegance as well as for their playful exuberance.
